Activating Relationships in Illinois for Systemic Equity (ARISE) is an initiative launched by the  Illinois Department of Public Health Center for Minority Health Services in collaboration with the Illinois Office of Rural Health and WE in the World.  ARISE provides an opportunity for motivated communities in Illinois that have experienced historic and present-day inequities in the context of COVID-19 to advance community resilience, well-being, and equity. ARISE, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is intended to support socio-economically disadvantaged and historically marginalized communities in Illinois outside of Cook County that COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted.

WE in the World convened a year-long partnership of 18 coalitions and “micrograntees,” which included public health departments, community-based organizations, individuals with lived experience, or other stakeholders across Illinois that brought deep relationships with communities experiencing inequities to bend the trend toward well-being and justice. In the second phase of the ARISE project, 11 entities were selected to continue their equity journey through January 2024, deepening their work to make systemic change.

Together, we brought state funding to communities experiencing inequities and created a response that created jobs and met people’s food, health, and well-being needs. Together, we’re investing in building civic capacity to change the system so that these communities can be resilient and resourceful in charting a path toward long-term equity.

For the final phase of our partnership, ARISE invites partners ready for the next stage of their equity journey to build a plan for sustainable long-term change. These partners will receive additional funding to continue their efforts through May 15, 2024, attend WE WIN Together Week to share their stories, and receive accompaniment as they tell the stories of their journey.
